Don't Become an "Accidental Employer"
4/28/2010
Companions & Homemakers, Inc.’s General Counsel, J. Martin Acevedo, appeared on Fox61 television to discuss the legal and tax implications of hiring caregivers privately. In this segment, Attorney Acevedo discusses the pitfalls of hiring caregivers privately versus using an employment-based homemaker-companion agency like C&H. A person hiring a caregiver privately (or through a “referral” agency) may become the caregiver’s employer of record and, as a result, may become responsible for payroll state and federal taxes, unemployment and workers’ compensation.
